ULLA – the new shape of uplighting
Uplighting is one of the fastest-growing trends in modern lighting design. By directing a soft glow upward, it adds depth, visual balance, and a welcoming atmosphere that makes interiors feel more open and comfortable. Architects and lighting designers are embracing uplighting to create environments that are both functional and emotionally appealing.
Until now, LEDiL’s uplighting solutions have focused on linear designs. While highly effective, the market has shown growing demand for a compact, versatile option that integrates seamlessly with pendant downlights.
Introducing ULLA ‒ a round uplight optic designed specifically for pendant, cylindrical downlights, extending the benefits of uplighting to a whole new family of fixtures and spaces.
Enhancing downlights with soft uplight
ULLA brings a new dimension to cylindrical downlights, delivering a gentle upward glow that:
🔹 Improves visual comfort
🔹 Reduces glare and harsh shadows
🔹 Elevates atmosphere with soft, even illumination
Designed to pair seamlessly with LEDiL’s AMY-70 pendant downlights, ULLA provides a complete and refined lighting solution. The 70 mm donut-shaped optic supports a free LED pitch and is compatible with 3030 and 2835 MP LEDs, offering full tunable white capability for adaptable, high-quality illumination.
Why uplighting matters
Traditional downlights cast light only downwards, leaving ceilings and upper walls in shadow ‒ often making spaces feel darker and more enclosed. ULLA changes that.
The table below highlights common downlighting challenges and how ULLA solves them.
Challenge | Results with ULLA |
---|---|
Uneven lighting such as scallops or hot spots | Ceilings glow smoothly and uniformly |
Harsh contrast between task areas and surroundings | Balanced light throughout the room |
Visible cable shadow disrupting aesthetics | Cable shadow disappeared, enhancing visual clarity |
Non-compliance with office lighting standards | Illumination is both technically compliant and visually comfortable |
Design compromises | Architects and designers can realise their full intent |
The simulations below illustrate the difference in practice — from completely unlit or dim ceilings, to downlight-only scenarios where ceilings remain in shadow, and finally to bright, balanced spaces enhanced with ULLA uplighting.

Without uplighting: ceilings and walls remain dim; office lighting standards are not met.
With uplighting: ceilings and walls glow with balanced light, improving both aesthetics and compliance.
The result: balanced light that enhances comfort, wellbeing, and productivity.
More than just uplighting
ULLA was originally designed for uplighting, but it has proven to be much more versatile. While its upward glow remains iconic, ULLA can also be used in mushroom-style table lamps, floor luminaires with multiple light sources, designs featuring a central hole for PIR motion detectors, and even outdoor bollards. Its flexibility inspires new lighting ideas across a wide range of settings.
Let’s talk about ULLA.
