CASE STORY

THE BASILICA OF SAN FRANCESCO – ITALY

“The consequent high risk for glare together with the complex structures resulted in the need to develop dedicated optics for the purpose. The collaboration and contribution from LEDiL turned out to be indispensable for the project’s success.”

Federico Ognibene – ILM Lighting

PROJECT

The Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi Italy is an art piece itself, and to illuminate such a historically important and characteristic building is a task where the synergy of the old and new must be done with respect and precision. With the need to illuminate both larger spaces while having a delicate touch for the valuable frescos and details, the quality of light has to be perfect

SOLUTION

To get the interior lighting to meet the required levels is just the first step, as the visual comfort and flexibility is equally important. After a careful planning and numerous simulations, ILM Lighting and Federico Ognibene in collaboration with LEDiL provided a profound lighting solution especially designed for the application. The new elegant chandeliers were packed with MIRELLA reflectors and WINNIE-O lenses were used in the first luminaire in the world to provide elliptical beam from a COB LED. Special attention was given to minimize the visibility of the luminaires, for after all the visitors are not meant to focus on the light sources, but on the beauty, comfort and the ceremonies that the Basilica provides.

BENEFITS

The precisely calibrated uniformity and contrast levels increased the perception and comfort for all visitors and users alike, and brought the whole building with its timeless and beautiful geometry to a whole new era. In addition to the obvious energy savings compared to the previously used halogen and xenon lights, the LED technology lacks harmful UV and IR radiation ensuring that the beautifully decorated frescos will last for future generations. The need for maintenance levels has decreased significantly due the unparalleled lifetime of the LEDs, and with various lighting scenes the atmosphere can be optimized from ordinary visits to celebration. Thanks to the thorough made lighting plan and the high quality optics solutions the Basilica is now highlighted as it deserves.
